Served in the Confederacy during the Civil War, was captured at Cumberland Gap and imprisoned near Chicago. Family tradition states he died due to poor food and other unhealthy conditions in the camp as was so ofter during those war years. His military record indicates he was discharged at the end of the war. Nathaniel was a member of the 62nd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Haywood County, NC, 1850
