1755 - Nathaniel Barksdale is named overseer on one of theRandolph Plantations situated in Prince Edward County. Amongold records of the county is a list of tithables for 1755, whichshows: "Col. Randolph's List, Nathaniel Barksdale, Overseer." 8/4/1760, date of deed, Nathaniel Barksdale, of Prince EdwardCo., sold 100 acres to william Nix. 11/20/1760, date of deed, Abraham Abney to Nathaniel Barksdale,of Prince Edward Co. conveys 170 acres on the south side of theStaunton River in Halifax County. 8/1/1761, date of deed, Nathaniel Barksdale to John Kinkaid,conveys 600 acres, lying alonge the ridge between Lunenburg andPrince Edward. 2/16/1764, date of deed, Robert Hunt to Nathaniel Barksdale, ofHalifax County, VA conveys 365 acres on Catawba Creek. 10/1/1765, date of deed, Nathaniel Barksdale of Halifax, sold anadditional 132 acre tract between Lunenburg and Prince Edward toJohn Hill. 2/21/1778, date of deed, William Hill, exr. for Mattox Mayers,deceased, to Nathaniel Barksdale of Halifax, conveys 570 acreson mayers Creek. Nathaniel first bought land in Halifax in 1760, and he waswithout any doubt the first Barksdale to settle in that county.The conveyences recorded inthe land records show that hisplantation, or estate, was situated on the Staunton (Roanoke)River and Catawba Creek, between Cole's Ferry and Clarkton, some15 or more miles from his relatives, Collier, John, Dudley, andClairborne Barksdale, on theopposite side of the river inCharlotte County. He gradually built up quite an estate and became one of theprominent citiznes of Halifax County, serving as justice of thepeace in 1766. Provided beef to the army during the American Revolutioin, forwhich he was later reimbursed.
