Several years after Michael died, all of the family except Elizabeth moved to Illinois. Elizabeth was married to Amos Cook then. Here is the 1850 census, Pickaway Co, OH.

The father of Elizabeth (Nigh) Cook was Michael Nigh born November 21, 1803 in Hagerstown, Washington Co, MD. He was in the MexicanWar and died while serving in the Mexican War on Sept 5, 1847 in Santa Barja,Mexico. He died of Typhus Fever.

There was an error in the last paragraph of the obit of John Fry where it referred to Elizabeth's father -- "her father was a soldier in the War of 1812." Elizabeth's father was not in the War of 1812 -- he was in the Mexican War. Michael Nigh and his son, Isaac, both enlisted for service in the Mexican War in 1846. Isaac was 17 yrs old when he enlisted with his father. More to follow. Mary P.S. Found the following info on the Mexican War on the web:

The Mexican War between the United States and Mexico began with a Mexican attack on American troops along the southern border of Texas on Apr. 25, 1846. Fighting ended when U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott occupied Mexico City on Sept. 14, 1847; a few months later a peace treaty was signed (Feb. 2, 1848) at Guadalupe Hidalgo. In addition to recognizing the U.S. annexation of Texas defeated Mexico ceded California and , New Mexico (including all the present-day states of the Southwest) to the United States.

BACKGROUND

As with all major events, historical interpretations concerning the causes of the Mexican War vary. Simply stated, a dictatorial Centralist government in Mexico began the war because of the U.S. annexat

In the Nigh Cemetary there is a tombstone near Michael's gravestone that says;

Rosina Nigh, wife of Michael Nigh died __ 29, _41 (?) aged 29 years, 9 months

Now Rosina's name has never been recorded, but maybe he was married before and to someone from Maryland?
