"Murday," as his name is believed to have been pronounced, was a son of James Tate (1778-1849) and Elizabeth Smith (1809-1867).

He married Mary Moffatt in Howell City, Tennessee.

They came to Missouri sometime between 1854 and 1860, bringing their four children:

1. George M., 2. Martha, 3. Rachel E., 4. James B.

In Missouri, they had two more:

5. Mary M., 6. Julia Elizabeth

During the Civil War, Meredith was a Lieutenant in Company H of the 47th Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Infantry.

Following Mary's death in 1883, Meredith married Mrs. Martha Heneger 23 November 1883 in Howell County, Missouri.
