James Ashley settled in his native town. He and his wife united with the church in Westfield on February 29, 1734. He was chosen town constable in 1741 and tything-man in 1747. He styled himself "yeoman." [His will, dated 30 Oct 1750, proved 14 Aug. 1754, mentions his wife Mercy and his children Joseph and Mercy.{Hampsh. Co. Prob. Rec., vol. 8, p. 40}].
