Obituary

Mrs. Melvina Earp passed away Thursday noon, April 15. She had been in failing health for three years. During the last year she was confined in a large measure to a wheelchair. The last five weeks of her illness she was bedfast. The funeral was held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the United Brethren church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. O.J. Bogard. The burial was at the Van Meter cemetery. Six of her grandsons acted as pall-bearers, Lester Earp, Nile Earp, Clair Johnson, Oscar Johnson, Frank Earp, and Harold Earp. Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Fuller and Mrs. Banker and daughter of Valley Junction; Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Burgess and family and Mr. and Mrs. Beasley of Newton; Mrs. Elmer Clark and family of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Applegate, Mr. amd Mrs. Chase and Mrs. Shields and son from Adair; John Widner of Leon; Mr. and Mrs. Roberts from Adel; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Lutz, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson from Winterset.

Melvina Shields, daughter of James and Fanny Shields, was born in Black Hawk County, Iowa, August 14, 1845, and passed away at her home in Van Meter, Iowa. Thursday noon, April 15, 1926, after an extended illness, being 80 years, 8 months, and 1 day old. She moved with her parents while quite young to Henderson County, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. She was married June 2, 1862, to Samuel Hayed, who shortly afterwards entered the service of his country, from which he never returned. One daughter, Mrs. Fanny Johnson, of Earlham, survives this marriage. On November 2, 1865, she was married in Henderson County, Illinois, to F.M. Earp. They migrated to Iowa in 1874, locatingon a farm in Winterset, and later moving to North River, Iowa. In 1909 they moved to Van Meter, which has been their home since. Mr. Earp passed away January 27, 1921. To this union were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy, and Mrs. Edith Widner, who died May 2, 1916. The children remaining are: Chas. Earp of Waukee, Iowa, Otis and Joseph Earp of Boonville, Mrs. Effa Poffenbarger of Burlington, Iowa, Mrs. Lucy Malone, Mrs. Anna Clearwater, and Mrs. Myrtle Brooker of Van Meter. Twenty-eight grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren survive. Mrs. EArp joined the Methodist Episcopal church when 12 years of age and was a faithful member until she moved to the North River neighborhood, when she united with the United Brethren church, with which she continued a most devoted member the remainder of her life. She was buried on April 18, 1926 in Van Meter, Dallas County, Iowa.
