Worthington Globe May 16, 1938DRIVER OF OXEN DIES AT RUSHMORE Melvin Hovey, Rushmore pioneer who was called on to play the pioneer role of training and driving a team of oxen in the parade at the Rushmore Days of 78 celebration, will be present only in spirit when the historical parade forms next Tuesday.Yesterday a heart attack ended the life of Mr. Hovey, who had lived many years in the Rushmore community. He suffered an attack in the afternoon and was rushed to the Adrian Hospital where he died at 9 p.m. He would have been 68 years old on June 19.Funeral services had not been set today pending communication with relatives in California. Burial will be at Rushmore.
