Obituary first appeared in the Aden Argus, Aden, Modoc County, California. Contributed to the Brownell Book by Tim I. Purdy, Susanville, California 13 September 1888. The sad intelligence of the death of our esteemed neighbor, Mrs. M.C. Brownell, wife of R.G. Brownell, was received in the town of Lookout last Sunday. Mrs. Brownell died September 2nd, 1888 and was buried in Oakland, laid in the Mountain View Cemetery. She was born in Ohio Mar 12, 1830 and married Russell G. Brownell June 8, 1846 and was the mother of thriteen children, ten of whom are still living and have grown to honorable manhood and womanhood. The children living are: DeWitt C. Brownell, Mud Lake, Modoc County; D.C. Brownell, San Francisco; Mrs. Lucina M. Etzenhauser, Independence, MO; L.G. Brownell, Lookout, CA; Mrs. Gyretha Brown Fresno, CA; Mrs. Ima Packwood, Bieber, CA; Luells S. and DeLos G. Brownell of Lookout, CA. Mrs. Brownell had been a life sufferer and during her last days on earth was attended by her two sons, Duane and Don Carlos, also the best medical skill of the State. Everything was done to make her last days comfortable. She was a true neighbor and friend, a kind and indulgent mother, good and affectionate wife. Many times, as many citizens can attest, did she go in heat and cold, in rain and storm, by wants and alleviate the suffering of others. She has triumphantly and well done her mission here on earth, and now reposes in the high courts of heaven as God's good and faithful servant. The power to stay the rising tear and keep it from welling up anew is in the sweet promise, "There's rest in Heaven." Our dearest freinds fade away, and while we weep and our hearts bleed with anguish, there is solace--yes, there is happiness--in the thought, "sorrow vanquished, labor Jordan past. No fear, no woe. A calm and undistrubed repose. Asleep in Jesus." "One day nearer the water o'er, As he glides the water o'er, While the light is softly dying On his native shore "Thus the Christian, on life's journey, As his life-boat cuts the foam On the evening cries with rapture I am one day nearer home."
