Mac was salutatorian of his graduating class at the Marshall, Minn., High School in 1941, where he was active in music and hockey. He served in the U.S. Navy in in Newfoundland and Greenland, starting in 1941 and was released from service in Oct 1945 as an Aviaton Radioman 1st class. He graduated Cum Laude in Feb 2, 1947 from the University of Illinois as a Civil Engineer. He was working in Duluth, Minnesota and had just accepted a position with Western Electric in Indianapolis, Indiana when his plane crashed on his way home.
