Facts and Events
1. Matthew Gray was born October 16, 1822, the oldest of three brothers who emigrated to Denton County between 1852 and 1854. They came with several other families from Indiana to Texas, making the long, slow trip by wagon train. Denton County census rolls in 1860 identified the brothers as Matthew Gray, 37, Samuel Gray, 30, and John W. Gray, 25. Matthew and Samuel were born in Pennsylvania, and John had been born in Ohio. [I did not find John W. in Texas in 1860; he may be the John Gray residing with Robert and Sarah in 1860.] Like other early settlers, the family built a home along the west banks of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Matthew Gray acquired land in what is now the town of Shady Shores. He held real estate valued at $550 in the 1860 census and his personal estate was valued at $1,500. In 1874, the county tax inventory listed Matthew Gray as owning nine horses and 34 head of cattle with Bartlett Eaves and W.D. Durham. Matthew Gray was elected Justice of the Peace and was appointed sheriff in 1867, during Reconstruction in Texas. Matthew Gray married Nancy Hamilton in White County, Indiana, March 30, 1844. They had nine children, four born in Indiana before they traveled to Texas and five born in Texas. They came to Texas in 1854 and lived in McKinney, Collin County, for four years before moving to Denton County, according to the obituary of their oldest son. 2. Owned real estate valued at $2000 (1850). References
