ObituaryThe Delaware GazetteSeptember 2, 1892Mrs. Mary Sweetzer Hillyer was the daughter of William and Delight Sweetzer, pioneers and leading members of society in the infancy and early years of our city. Mrs Hillyer was the youngest of a large family of nine children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. Most of whom grew to adult years, four brothers occupying through life prominent places in business and political circles. The late Charles Sweetzer, one of these brothers, was a lawyer and politician of much distinction in his day. Mary Sweetzer was born on the 8th of April 1817, on the old Sweetzer Farm where her father and mother moved in 1815; she was married to Picton Dwight Hillyer in 1846. Four children came in time. Three died young. Only one remains, Alice, wife of John W. White, Prof. Of Greek at Harvard College. The Funeral will be tomorrow from her home of 30 years.
