Mary was the oldest of a family of five. There were three girls and two boys. Mary was born and grew up in Thornton Illinois, which at the time was a rural farming community south of Chicago, but has since become suburban. She married Charles Thimian in 1887S3,S5. They had five children, Walter, Charlie, Louise, Tony, Edna. All their children were born in Illinois.
In 1893, six years after marrying Charles, she lost youngest sister Minnie to typhoid fever. Her second child Charlie was born that same year.
In the 1900 census the Charles and Mary Polkow Thimian household follows that of her father Carl Polkow, meaning they lived near her father, probably next door.
In 1903, she would again have a child and lose a family member. Mary's youngest child, daughter Edna was born in 1903. Mary's mother Fredericke died that year.
Sometime between 1903 and 1910 the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father Carl is living in their household in 1910 so he must have gone with them after having become a widower.
