Facts and Events
William who married Mary Mason and farmed at Wickington in South Tawton until 1836, Andrew Snell who married Elizabeth Coombe, George who married Elizabeth Youlden and Richard Snell whose descendents were in Newton Abbot in 1891. John`s will in 1828, was very detailed and rather contentious. Whilst he leaves different properties to his children, the majority of his estate, including Reddaway appears to have been left to his son George. He states that if any of his other sons shall attempt to go to law with his son George, that their legacy shall be absolutely void. However, John appears to have had many debts, and used his aunt Ann Snell, a spinster, as a bond creditor. In the inventory for John, dated 1833-4, it clearly shows that once these debts were paid there was little left. This had a disastrous effect on all the sons, William loses Wickington and Bridestow properties and in 1851 is living with his son in law in Okehampton. Richard Snell and Andrew Snell moved to the Tavistoke area and died young. Henry died in the 1840`s in London and George emigrated to Australia, although in 1841 his two daughters are still in Sampford Courtenay at Reddaway Farm. Two of William`s sons seem to have joined their Uncle George in Australia. They could have sailed together as certainly they are not in Devon in 1841. John married Jane Sloggett and Richard Mount Edgecombe married Barbara Huggard and from these two brothers came many Australian descendants.
