  16. Mary Ann Chase
Mrs. Mary Chase, one of the old pioneers of this region, passed away Sunday evening, March 18, after several months' illness.
Mary Ann Hickox was born in Medina county, Ohio, in 1833 and was married at the age of sixteen to Marshal Jackson Chase. About two years later, with her husband and infant son, she migrated to Clinton county, Michigan, where they lived as pioneers. In 1860 her husband was injured while working in the woods and it became necessary for them to part with the home and move to Lansing. February 1877, they came north to Pleasanton township, making the overland trip from Ludington on sleighs, as that was the nearest railroad point, and crossing Bear Lake on the ice, the roads being blockaded with snow.
Her pioneer days were rich in interesting experiences. Coming to Michigan from Ohio they made the trip with ox teams over much corduroy road where in places logs that had floated out with high water had to be replaced before advancing. During their first summer in this state cooking was done in the oven by the side of a log, later at a fireplace with its primitive stick chimney and by the use of a tin oven, open on the fireside, which was considered very up-to-date but was later replaced by a brick oven.
The roof and floor of their log house home was made of oak bark, floors being laid rough side up, the fireplace end of the room having ground floor only. The next improvement in the floor was made by splitting logs thru their centers, laying flat sides up, then hewing or rather adzing their surfaces to as true a plane as possible.
Tallow candles made by dipping were her first artificial light. These were followed by those made in moulds and later by what were known as fluid oil lamps.
She united with the Baptist church in Lansing and later with the Seventh Day Adventist church of Bear Lake.
She was the mother of three children: G. Carlos Chase of Robbins, Wisconsin; and Mrs. Florence Heidley and Henry H. Chase of Bear Lake. She also leaves six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her death, at the age of eighty-four, is but the second in her line covering a period of seventy years and reaching into the fourth generation.
Her life was an open book and was best reflected in her loyalty to friends and kindred, her cheerfulness during affliction and in the memories of her acquaintances who may witness the worth of a life well spent.
Rev. Hillborn conducted funeral services at the Baptist church Wednesday forenoon. Interment was in Fairview cemetery.
