The Identity of the Wife of George Lewis

“It is obvious that Mary (Doggett) Lewis was the mother of George Lewis’s children that were born in England. Since (Robert S.) Wakefield concludes that the evidence indicates Mary was the mother of “at least the last three children,” i.e., those born in New England, the conclusion seems inescapable that she was his only wife and the mother of all his children. The tradition the George Lewis’s wife was Sarah Jenkins must now be abandoned, and its provenance left to speculation.”[1]

His [George Lewis] first wife, whom he married in England about 1626, was Sarah Jenkins, a sister of Edward Jenkins, who was subsequently a resident of Scituate. She accompanied him to America and died in Barnstable. [Earlier on page, source says George was in Plymouth in 1633, in Scituate in 1635, to Barnstable in 1639.]

More recent scholarship by Robert S. Wakefield and Gordon L. Remington has established that George Lewis had but one wife, Mary Doggett.

Anderson, in The Great Migration sketch of George Lewis, has him in Scituate in 1634 and in Barnstable by 1642. Apparently Anderson found no record which would place him in New England prior to the end of 1633 since he was not treated in The Great Migration Begins.
