Even though 19-year-old Susan Magoffin was long called the "First Lady of the Santa Fe Trail" because she accompanied her new husband there in 1846 (and kept a diary which was rediscovered and published in 1926), she was a latecomer. Fourteen years before that, in 1832, Mary Dodson Donoho accompanied her husband, William, down the Trail to Santa Fe, where they operated a hotel on the Plaza for five years before heading back to Missouri. Their son, James, was born there and returned as an infant; he appears in the 1850 census as born in Mexico.

She successfully ran the hotel for many years after her husband's death in 1845.
