READ, or REED, JAMES, Taunton, s[on]. perhaps youngest, of William of Dorchester; perhaps the soldier of Johnson's comp. in Philip's war, m[arried]. 18 Apr. 1683, Susanna Richmond, d[aughter]. of John had James, William; John, Thomas, Mary, b[orn]. 1697, Martha, Ann, and Susanna.

This name is very common, often written Reed, and under either form likely to breed confus[ion]. betw[een]. sev[eral]. hav[ing]. the same bapt[ized]. title. Aft[er]. spend[ing]. many hours of sev[eral]. days, I am unable to reconcile and fix the habita[tation]. of all. Farmer found 60 gr[aduating]. in the N[ew]. E[ngland]., N[ew]. J[ersey]., and Union Coll[eges]. 1829. Twelve at Harv[ard]. and eleven at Yale had been gr[aduated]. in 1834.

A daughter [of Thomas and Elizabeth Atkins], m. --- Reed, probably a son of the John Reed of Kittery who was killed by the Indians and whose wife Mary and son John were carried into captivity but were later redeemed. This Mary Reed d. in Braintree, Mass,. 16 May 1691 (S.A. Bates, Records of Braintree (1886), p. 658), probably at the home of Abigail (Atkins) Heyford. A Mary Reed, living with the Heyfords in Pembroke, to which place they removed, m. 4 June 1717, as his second wife, Joseph2 Tubbs (William1) in Pembroke, by whom she had three children recorded there. Joseph Tubbs d. in 1739; his will in Plymouth (vol. 8, p. 158) shows wife Mary was living. No proof was found to indicate whether she was Mary (Davis) Reed, a widow or her daughter.
