She was the child of Thomas Conklin and Katherine Bridget Burke. She probably was adopted by Michael Coughlin, Katherine's second husband whom she married about 1858.

She is listed with her family in the Iowa Dubuque 1860 Census as Mary A. Coughlin, 4 years old, born in New York. She is listed in the 1870 Census as Mary Conklin (spelling).

The 1880 Census for Cedar Rapids City, Linn County, IA lists:

The Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids in 1880 was Immaculate Conception. Rev. Thomas F. Gunn becomes the second resident pastor. He served 26 years. He enlarges the church, builds a rectory, and encourages the Sisters of Mercy in the project of building a hospital.

Talked with my Dad about the McLains. It seems one of the daughters was named Barbara, she was a little older ( note: born before 1918) than my Dad. They lived in Germantown, Pa. Their visit happened in the summer.Mike Newquist 5/17/03
