Pittsburgh Flood, March 1936 According to Rita Murray Byers, Mary Carroll Martin and one of her granddaughters (a daughter of Chuck and Marie Martin) were evacuated by boat. Chuck and Marie, and perhaps one of their sons, were evacuated in another boat. It was several days before Chuck and Marie had word that Mary was alive. There was no form of communication during the flood.

Searched following ed's in 1900 census on Ancestry.com. Even though the marriage docket of January 1902 states her address as Etna, Mary Carroll is not in the 1900 census in Etna.
