"He was a man of much intelligence, animated, and interesting in conversation, courteous in manner, pure in character, frank in expression, and possessing qualities that endeared him to a large circle of friends. In the family circle no one could be more attractive. He was particularly fond of children, who always warmly reciprocated his partiality. In his last sickness his patience, gentleness and politeness were remarkable, and he displayed in its distressful experiences some of the best traits that adorn the human character."
