Facts and Events
Possibly known as Maria or Mayke. She was one of the three Marys found in the early generations of this family; two of them married an Abraham Sutphen and the third married Anthony Holsart. The two Abraham Sutphens were uncle and nephew and to avoid confusion the first has been referred to as "the elder" and the second as "the younger". Mary Van Barkelo No. 98 married Abraham Sutphen "the elder" who was baptized Sept. 25 1696 in Ne Utrecht Dutch Church, a son of Dirck & Leysebet (Jans) Sutphen. This family lived in Marlboro, N.J., where their first 3 children were baptized in the Dutch Church and later moved to Staten Island, where their four younger children were baptized. The mother's maiden name is given as MAYKE in the Marlboro baptisms and as MARYTJE Borkelo in the Staten Island entries. |
