Born about 1868, Martin perhaps enlisted in the Imperial Army soon after his brother James? He died during the Siege of Ladysmith, in the Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902. From the National Monuments Council of South Africa, I have received the following notes from the British Graves Committee, South Africa; From Steve Watt’s register: Pte. SWIFT, West Liverpool Regiment, on the panel on the third side of main British monument at Intombi Camp Cemetery, Ladysmith. Pte SWIFT M., Tunnel Hill, Ladysmith. From the Guild of Loyal Women’s Register; Pte. SWIFT, 4659, 1st Liverpool Regiment died 9.1.1900. From The Army Book 72; Pte. SWIFT, 4659, died of enteric at Intombi Camp. From the 1904 Register of Graves; #135, Reg. No. 4659, Pte SWIFT, W. 1st Bn Liverpool R, Enteric, Roman Catholic, buried at Intombi. The compiler of the information thought that initials M & W could easily be confused or interchanged. Probably is Martin. MARTIN SMITH
