Martin Sweeney was baptised on 28th October 1849 at Castleconor in County Sligo, son of Mary Sweeney, formerly Kilcawley (or Cawley), and her husband Michael Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. His godparents were Stephen and Ann Cawley, who were presumably relatives of his mother's. Martin's parents and siblings moved away from Ireland to Scotland within eighteen months after his birth, as they appear there in the 1851 census. However, Martin is not with them, suggesting perhaps that he died young; burials were not being recorded at Castleconor at this time.
