Martin appears to have immigrated in 1838 to Buffalo, New York. He came from Alsace, Bas Rhin, France. This area was mostly under Germanic influence but was part of both Germany and France at different times. During the time of Martin's birth and his immigration, the area had been part of France for over a hundred years and did not revert back to German rule until the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Martin was patriotically French, but German in language and customs.

When Martin moved to Pike Co., Missouri is unknown. There are other Marzolfs who immigrated from Oberbetschdorf to Pennsylvania and Pike County, Missouri. At this time, I assume that there is probably some connection to them. Martin and Elizabeth were married in June, 1844 in Pike County but were in Wisconsin by the time their first child Sarah was born nine months later in March 1845. According to all the census reports, all their children were born in Wisconsin.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Martin moved his family to Nebraska and then to Oregon where both he and Elizabeth died.
