MARTHA WAS FIRST MARRIED TO JOHN UNCAS. SHE WAS MOHEGAN BY VIRTUE OF HER MARRIAGE TO JOHN UNCAS AND HER FAMILY LIVING IN MOHEGAN. HOWEVER HER FATHER JOSEPH SHANTUP WAS PROPERLY A PEQUOT AND HER MOTHER HANNAH ASHBOW WAS ONLY HALF MOHEGAN AND AT LEAST HALF PEQUOT. THOUGH THE SHANTUPS WERE LIVING AMONG THE MOHEGANS THEY WERE CONSIDERED PEQUOT INDIANS. FORT SHANTUP STATE PARK IS NAMED AFTER THE SHANTUP FAMILY.
