Mattie's age is listed as 3 years of age in 1870, according to the Census of that year. She was still at home with her widowed mother, living in Valley District in 1880, at age 12 years.

In 1893, Mattie had a son out of wedlock, named Clarence. He was killed in 1897, at the age of 4, when he was accidentally pulled off a horse . Clarence is buried in the Gordon Cemetery, near Gladesville, next to his grandmother, Mary Freeburn Conley, and his uncle, Edward Bunker Conley.

Two years later in 1895, she married Jacob Shisler. By the June 1900 Census, she was widowed and living with her brother, Edward Bunker Conley, in Valley District. (Her age was listed as 27; however, prior census records indicate her age as 32.)

During the 1910 Census, she was living alone next door to her sister, Mary Jane (Conley) Greaser, in Kingwood District. She was working on a truck farm.

Mattie died near Brown's Chapel, WV, and is buried at the Gordon Cemetery near Gladesville, with her third husband, Henry Scott.
