Marion Nittel

CHATHAM - Marion Rivers Nittel of South Chatham passed away on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

Marion was born, raised, and educated in the Attleboro area, and later attended business school in Providence. After marrying Karl Nittel in 1948, she settled in North Attleboro, and later Attleboro to raise her family.

As her children grew older, Marion returned to the workplace and was employed by Augat Inc. of Attleboro for 14 years, retiring as the supervisor of communications group.

She and Karl retired to South Chatham in 1983, where she enjoyed many wonderful years living by a saltwater marsh.

Her hobbies included decorative painting, home projects, gardening, the piano and writing children's stories, and she received many awards for her work from the "Prime Time Cape Cod" writing contest. She especially treasured writing and receiving handwritten letters from friends and others. In 1997, she wrote to Tom Brokaw about her experiences on the homefront during World War II. Her story was included in his book "The Greatest Generation."

Surviving her are her husband Karl, son Mark, grandson Alexander, daughter-in-law Kathryn, and several nieces. She was predeceased by her daughter, Marcia, who passed away in 1996.

Her memorial service and burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to her favorite charities, The Marcia Nittel Scholarship Fund, c/o The Attleboro Scholarship Foundation, P.O.
