Facts and Events
Mrs Nathan B Kennedy, Hattie Lee Kennedy's mother, thought Hattie was not a good parent to Marie Carrico, took Marie away from Hattie, place her in Catholic convent in New Orleans (Ursuline Academy?- newspaper clipping in private collection KLM). Marie spent most of her youth at convent, rarely visited by family, one summer allowed to have pet pig (tradition per JMC, CBS). Marie rarely spoke of father Crist Carrico. KLM email 3 Apr 2005 "Ma-Maw Stanley was born Marie Mistrot Carrico. When her mother and father divorced, her grandmother Susan Kennedy, took her away from her mother, Hattie or Harriet, because she did not agree with Daughter's "life style." She placed Ma-Maw in a convent in New Orleans. At some point, if I remember correctly, she was at a convent or school in Palestine. Mammy, as she called her grandmother, would come to visit her for two weeks during the summer. The rest of the summer Ma-Maw spent alone in the dormitory except for an occasional over-night stay by one of her favorite nuns to keep her company. They also let her have a pet pig one summer. Must have been a very lonely life. I don't know what they did not like about Christ Carrico. Ma-Maw said one time that they felt that Daughter had married beneath her status in life. She was estranged from her parents, Nathan and Susan Kennedy. She later married Fred Mair, so she then became Harriet Lee Mair. They lived in Colorado. For a while she lived in San Diego. There she made friends with various sea captains who would send her unposted stamps from all over the world. Finally she ended up in Mineral Wells at a nursing home because Ma-Maw was not able to keep her with her. She died when I was in high school." References
