The first known record that refers to Margaret is the baptism of her first child with George Stephenson in 1667. Based on this date it can be estimated that Margaret was born around 1636-1651. No marriage record has yet been found for the couple.

George and Margaret had four children baptised in East Grinstead:

  • Samuel bap. 11 Oct 1667
  • Elizabeth bap. 28 Dec 1668
  • Sarah bap. 3 May 1671
  • George bap. 1 Jul 1676

The time gap between Sarah and George implies the possible birth of another child whose baptism record has not yet been found - a child named Margaret Stephenson was buried in 1674 and she may have been the daughter of George and Margaret.

It's not known what became of Elizabeth or George Jr. however George Jr. may be the same person who had children baptised in East Grinstead between 1719 and 1725 and died in 1725, although this would make him 43 at the birth of his first child which is a little on the old side. There are also apprenticeship records from 1712 and 1717 that refer to a Master Currier (person who cures leather) named George Stephenson/Stevenson who could be this same person.

In 1693 George and Margaret's eldest child Samuel married Jane Payne, daughter of William and Susan. No children have yet been found for this marriage and no further record has been found for Samuel or Jane.

On 20 May 1705 George and Margaret's 34 year-old daughter Sarah married 25 year-old John Creasy, son of surgeon John Creasy and Dorothy Greenwood. Sarah gave George and Margaret two grandsons, Ninion (bap. 1706) and George (bap. 1709) Creasy.

Margaret's husband George was buried 8 Dec 1712 in East Grinstead. His burial record notes he was "an old man".

Margaret was buried a few years later on 4 Oct 1715. Her burial record says she was a widow and that she was poor.

Geographical and Historical Context

East Grinstead has been an important market town since the early middle ages. St. Swithun's Church was rebuilt after it was struck by lightning in 1772. Near the entrance to the church, stones mark the supposed ashes of three martyrs who were burned on 18 July 1556 during the reign of Mary I because they refused to renounce the Protestant faith.

Margaret was likely born during the reign of Charles I. He lived through the tumultuous interregnum period, the restoration era of Charles II and James II and the "Glorious Revolution" that put William III & Mary II on the throne. He died during the reign of Queen Anne.
