! BIRTH: Margaret was born abt 1789 in County Carlow, IRELAND the younger of several daughters born to an English family which had settled in Ireland since an ancestor had received a grant of land for service in Cromwell's army in the 1600's. The Payne's were among the earliest members of the George Fox's Societyof Friend's and Margaret was raised a Quaker, although she converted to the church of England upon her marriage and raised all her children Anglicans. Her family took great pride at never intermarrying with the native IRISH Catholics. and Margaret apparently retained a certain elitism all her life. Her father liked to gamble on horses and died when Margaret was 9, though her mother lived to extreme old age and died in Margaret and Thomas's home in IRELAND. Margaret was apparently a very domineering and strong willed woman. She died sometime after 1850. ( from Richard Harris) : grew up as a Quaker in County Carlow Ireland, went to England and met and married in the Church oc England Thomas George Harris. (a British Army Officer) Moved to Quebec 1840's and later to Wisconsin. Oldest children born in England ( Sally, Jane, and George ) youngest 8 in Ireland. Very strong willed! Descended from Thomas Payne(Paine) and John Tyndale.
