The marriage record for Margaret O’Brien and Thomas Reddin states that they were attended by Edward Clancy and Elizabeth Cashen of Cascade, Iowa, June 10, 1858 (St. Martin's Marriage Records by Sister Dolores McAllister) On the 11 July 1865 Judge Stephen Hemstead of Dubuque County, Iowa signed an a statement that the marriage license was issued for Thomas Reddan and Margaret O'Brien on the 7th of June 1858. The marriage was solemnized on the 20th day of June 1858 by James Slattery a Catholic Priest. This record was taken for the pension records of Thomas Redden. It was used as proof so Margaret O'Brien would receive his pension for his death in the Civil War battle of Kinston, NC. In the 1860 census taken on 19 July 1860 of Thomas Reddin 28 years and his wife, Margaret O’Brien Reddin 25 years were living in Washington Township, Jones County, Iowa on a farm. Thomas was listed as a farmhand. Catherine Reddin born in Iowa was listed as one year old. They were living with Richard and Bridget Clauson and their children, Michael, Nathan and Mary. The adults were born in Ireland. The 1870 census taken on 6 June 1870 of Whitewater Twp., Dubuque, County, Iowa shows Margaret and children were living in Cascade, Iowa. Margaret's age was 40, Catherine 10, Bridget 8 and Mary 6, Margaret Redding, age 60 mother-in-law and John Bane age 58. The 1880 census taken the 17th and 18th June 1880 of Whitewater township, East Cascade in the county of Dubuque, Iowa lists Margaret Reddin, age 40 widowed, Margaret Reddin (mother-in -law) age 60 widowed, Mary 17, Bridget 18, Catherine Rice 21 married and George Rice age 1, grandson, Johanna Bahen sister-in -law age 62 years married and Mary Cashion 22 years single was listed as a friend.. I Think the ladies lied about their age , after ten years they are still the same age. In the 1885 Iowa State Census Margaret Reddin was living in Cascade, with her two grandsons, George Rice age 9 and Thomas Mullady age 4 living at home for the present. The 1900 census taken on the 2nd and 3 rd of June 1900 in Whitewater Township in Cascade Town, Dubuque County, Iowa lists Margaret Reddin as 60 years old, born in 1840 in Ireland; daughter, Mrs. Kate Rice 40 years born April 1859; Mary Reddin 36 years, born April 1863 single and Thomas Reddin son of Mary 19 years, born April 1889. Thomas was listed as a butcher. The 1910 census taken on the 15th of April in Whitewater Township in Cascade, Dubuque County, Iowa lists Margaret Reddin as 80 years old, widowed; Mary Reddin 40 years, single and workings as a nurse for a private family and son Thomas Reddin 24 years single workings as a Police Officer on City Street. The following is the obituary take from the Cascade Pioneer the local Newspaper for the town of Cascade, Iowa. DEATH OF MRS. MARGARET REDDIN Mrs. Margaret Reddin died at her home in East Cascade, Saturday. She had been in poor health for several years and failed perceptibly. During the past winter months. Mrs. Reddin's maiden name was Margaret O'Brien and she was born in County Clare, Ireland in 1834. She was therefore in her 79th year. She came to the United States in 1857, locating in Cascade, Iowa. In June, 1858, she was married to Thomas Reddin. When the Civil War Broke out, Mr. Reddin enlisted in Company D, Ninth Iowa Infantry regiment, and was killed at Kingston, North Carolina, March 13, 1865. He left a widow with a family of children, Mrs. Reddin worked hard and nobely to their support during the years of their dependency as well as caring for her aged mother. (This was her mother-in-law, Margaret Reddin) Her devotion during many long years was exemplary and called forth Many expressions of commendation not only upon the occasion of her death but during her lifetime. She was a devoted Catholic and always a consistent communicant and zealous observer of the tennents of her faith. Mrs. Reddin is survived by her daughters Mrs. Bridget Kelly, Denver, Mary Reddin of Cascade: Grandsons George Rice of Kadoka, S. D. And Marshal Thomas Reddin of Cascade. One daughter Catherine Rice died August, 1900. One sister Mrs. Catherine Dolan (Dowling) of Seamount, Wisconsin. survives her. The funeral was held Tuesday morning from the residence to St. Martin's Church where services were held at 9:30. The Pall bearers were: S.T. Kean, P.L.Devaney, Jacob Loes, B.F. Crawford, William Drummond, and T. J. Durkin. The family of Mrs. Reddin desire to thank their many friends and neighbors For kindnesses extended during their bereavement. Witnesses for the marriage were Edward Clancy and Elizabeth Cashen.
