There is a Day 1 Cem., near Macksville in the Pendleton Co. Grave Reg. W.V. 1977 where a Martha Susan Painter is listed--1853 - 1949. Also listed Is Margaret J.  While trying to piece together my Harper Family ancestry, I became a little familiar with Your G/G/G Grandmother Margaret J."Peggy 's". family as both our lines led back to Philip Harper Sr. who came to America from Germany. There has been a lot of research done on this family. The line of Margaret's in America  started with  Philip Sr., Philip Jr., Adam (Mary "Polly" Vance), Joshua (Catherine Conrad), Margaret J.  Margaret never married & I believe she may have had 9 children.  I don't have a lot of sources for tracing families so a lot of info came from the census, Grave Reg., & family knowledge as they knew it.  I didn't really want to post some of this info as it may not all be correct. I'm not certain how much would  you like to know as far as seeing the  census listings.  The ch. of Margaret were James M., Martha Susan, Bennett,  Martin K.., Mary A., William F., 

Daugherty, Robert, & Marg. They all went by the last name of Harper. Daugherty md. my Great Aunt & I was in touch with a descendant of Robert 's who felt that his G/G/G/Grandfather was David Simmons who was living in the household in the 1870 & 1880 census, didn't really know who James & Martha Susan's father was. Margaret was living with her Mother Catherine in 1860. Marg.'s age was given as 24, James M. age 6 & Martha Susan as 3.

 In the 1900 census, the listing was Ephraim Calhoun b. Oct. 1862-age 37; Martha S. b. Oct 1853 - age 47; s/s Robert R. Painter b. May 1885- age 15; s/s  Walter K. b. March 1889 -age 11; s/s  Jacob A. b.July 1892 - age 7; s/d  Flotie E., b. July 1896  - age  3.
  In the 1910 census, Martha Painter was listed as Div. , 6 ch.-- Walter 19, Jacob 15, Flota 14,  Robert  Painter age 24 was living in the household of MacDonald.  Also in 1910, Peggy Jane -age 74 (9 children, 6 living) was living with her son James M. & his family.  In the 1920 census I saw  "one" Susan  age 68 listed as a boarder with Olie Harper  who would have been a nephew if this was Martha Susan.
   I'm hoping that you don't find this info too confusing the way that I have stated it.  The Harper family is a very "old" family in Pendleton Co. & I'm beginning to believe that a few generations ago, the Harpers were related to about everyone there either through blood or marriage. A few generations ago,  times were very hard for a lot of people & they had to find ways to survive.
 I believe that you may have wanted some info on the Painter Family which has been a little confusing for me to understand & there were not that many in the census in Pend. Co.
