Death[1] Abt 1790 Southington, Hartford, Connecticut, United States (probably)

"In Timlow's Sketches of Southington[2] the name Norman Mansfield Merriman is given to the eldest child of John and Mabel Merriman, and this was copied in the book Merriman Reunion and Genealogy[3] published at New Haven in 1914. Recent investigation shows that the word Norman is an error, for it cannot be verified by any record. On the Farmington books (Land Records, VIII,6) his birth record is as follows:

Meriman Mansfield son to John Meriman Junr Born May 3d 1752

Evidently some copyist mistook the first word of this record for Norman, for sometimes the Christian name is given first, although the usual form is like that just stated. Also the name Norman cannot be found on the Southington records, although the name Mansfield Merriman is there given as the father of five children born between 1780 and 1790. Again, the will of John Merriman mentions 'my son Mansfield Merriman, dec'd.' These facts show that the name Norman has no validity and it should not hereafter be prefixed to the first Mansfield Merriman who was fifth in descent from Richard Mansfield and fourth in descent from Nathaniel Merriman."[5]
