UNHAPPY BRIDE FINDS FRIEND OF FORMER DAYS
Mrs. Frederick Markley, 326 Schuylkill avenue, reading in the Eagle of the plight of Mrs. George Hagen of Walnut street, war bride who fainted in a local cigar factory where she was employed, for want of food, recognized in the 22 year old telephone operator from Cologne, Germany, a dear friend of the days when she, too, lived in Cologne.
Mrs. Markley visited the office of Mrs. M. Florence Sidel, agent for the Humane Society where there was enacted a touching reunion of the two women from a far country. Mrs. Markley and the young bride, while in Cologne lived in the same neighborhood, within 4 blocks of one another.
George Hagen, Reading man, who met the German girl several years ago while he was with the United States army in Germany and who married her three weeks ago in New York upon her arrival in this country and then brought her to Reading, faces charges of non support surety of the peace. He will be given a hearing on Monday before Alderman Printz. It is alleged that he failed to provide for the support of his German bride and that although she went to work in a cigar factory and was earning sufficient money to take care of her own needs, he failed to provide her with food. When she collapsed at her place of employment she was weak from lack of nourishment.
The reunion between the forlorn bride and Mrs. Markley was quite touching. Mrs. Hagen speaks English well, for she was in the English division of the Cologne telephone exchange.
"For three weeks I have looked upon strange faces, not daring to call any person friend." said Mrs. Hagen. "Now I am happy."
Mrs. Sidel, the humane society officer, whose investigation resulted of the prosecution of the bride's husband, has arranged that Mrs. Hagen make her home with Mrs. Markey, who has been in this country 15 months, and is happily married. The two women are overjoyed at the prospect of living under the same roof. The Humane Society received numerous other offers from families that were eager to provide a home for Mrs. Hagen.

MABEL E. HAGEN SCHONOUR, 92, formerly of Sinking Spring, died Wednesday morning at 6:30 in Berks Heim [Nursing and Rehabilitation].
She was predeceased by two husbands: George L. Hagen in 1925 and John E. Schonour, on Oct. 9, 1961.
Born in Spring Township, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Alice (Noll) Kelchner.
She had been employed for many years as a housekeeper by Community General Hospital before her retirement.
She was a member of St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, Wernersville.
Surviving are a son, Clifford Hagen, Hagerstown, Md.; a step-son, Herbert F. Schonour, and a stepdaughter, Grace L. Herbst, both of Sinking Spring; and two stepgrandsons and three stepgreat grandchildren.
The Lamb & Whitman Funeral Home, Wernersville, is in charge of arrangements.
