Luther simplified the spelling of his name from Teerpenning to Terpening. In 1900, they lived in Barry County, Luther was 43, Ella, 31. The children were "Lottie, 15, Royal, 14, Lloyd, 13, Laura 10, Elmer 8, Pearl 6, Maggie 4, Dora & Ora, both 2, and Levi, 11 months.

Both Luther and Ella and five of their children are buired in the Cedar Creek Cemetary, Hope Township, Barry County, Michigan. This family resided on Tillotson Road, north of Shultz, in Hope township, where Luther was a famer on the famly farm.

In 1920, the sons, Elmer & Herman, resided with their parents on the family farm. After Luther's death, Ella resided at Midland Park, Gull Lake, Kalamazoo County. The Terpening farm backed up to the farm of Ella's father, David R. Smith, who resided on Shultz Road.
