Luke Walton was born in 1838 and baptised early the following year at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Walton, formerly Ward, and her husband Robert Walton, a shepherd. Luke appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings on South Street in Great Hale. In 1851 he was working as an errand boy and living with his uncle, Luke Ward, a carpenter, who also lived on South Street. By 1861 young Luke was also working as a carpenter, and he was living again with his parents, who by that time were living at 6 North Street in Great Hale.
Some time between 1861 and 1871 Luke left Great Hale and moved nearly 90 miles north-west to Leeds.
On 2nd June 1873, aged 34, Luke married Sarah Pyrah at Holy Trinity Church in the Armley Hall area of Leeds. She was nearly nine years his junior. They appear in the 1881 census living at 13 Granite Street in the Wortley area of Leeds, when they had two daughters called Ann Elizabeth and Isabella and a son called John William living with them. Another daughter, Clara Ellen, followed later in 1881.
Luke died on 2nd April 1883, aged 44. Sarah was pregnant at the time, giving birth to a baby at the start of 1884, although the baby died young. Sarah outlived Luke by many years; it has yet to be established when she died, but she was still alive in 1911.
Back in Great Hale, both Luke's parents survived him.
