Captain Luke2 Hitchcock (Luke1), born at Wethersfield, Conn., 5 June 1655, died at Springfield, Mass., 27 Jan. 1726/7 in 72d year (gravestone); married at Springfield, 14 Feb. 1676/7, Sarah (Burt) Dorchester … born at Springfield, 4 Sept. 1656, died there 9 Nov. 1746, aged 91 (gravestone) or 8 Nov. 1746, aged 90 (church record), daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Lobdell) Burt, and widow of Benjamin Dorchester.
He became a prominent citizen of Springfield. He was Constable of the town, 1681; and Selectman, 1687, 1696, 1704, 1705, 1712, 1715, 1720 and 1725. He was Representative to the Mass. General Court, 1696, 1697, 1698, 1713, 1715,1716, 1718, 1719,1720 and 1722. He was often Moderator of the Town Meeting, held minor town offices in his early career, and later was treasurer a number of years; and in 1693 was appointed with Capt. Thomas Colton to go to 'the Bay' to procure a minister for the town.
He was called Sergeant in 1693, Lieutenant in 1707, and Captain in 1716. With his brother John, he served in King Philip's War, and was under Capt. Turner in the 'Falls Fight,' His son Luke, for this service, was in 1741 a grantee of Bernardston, at first called 'Falltown,' Colraine and Leyden. He served also as Sheriff of Hampshire County.
The family history states that he was a shoemaker and that he kept a tavern. His will, signed 26 May 1722, proved 16 May 1727, remembered his wife, sons Luke, Ebenezer and Peletiah, and daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Mercy, Hannah, Thankful and Mary."
