The Hendrix family came into Sequatchie Valley early in the nineteenth century. On the Marion County records several different men were in the valley prior to 1820. In the early deed records, Luke Hendrix purchased a number of tacts of land in the Third District on the Little Sequatchie and Sequatchie Rivers in the Spring of 1820. He received a 250 acre tract from the Tennessee Grant 5840; 140 acres adjacent to this from Thomas N. Clark; 125 acres on the Little Sequatchie River that was adjacent to the above; 119 acres adjacent to the above; and 150 acres on Battle Creek in the Third District adjacent to George Lowery's reservation. Luke began to sell off some of these lands by 1822. We note that Luke Hendrix, age 80, and born in NC was living with Jesse J. Griffith, probably a son-in-law in 1850.
