J. E. BERRY, farmer, section 27, Greenbrier Township, was born in Davis County, Iowa, April 23, 1846, son of James and Nancy (McConnell) Berry, who reared a family of eight children -- Thomas, J.E., John, Samuel, Ephraim, Margaret, William and Mary E. Mr. Berry was reared on a farm, and educated in the common schools.

He learned the carpenter's trade, and has followed it many years. He was married March 9, 1873, to Lucinda Breeding, daughter of Alexander Breeding, a prominent pioneer of Davis County. In 1879 he came to this county, locating upon his present farm, which was then in its wild state. He has since made good improvements, has a comfortable house and a good barn and orchard. His farm consists of 120 acres of good land as can be found in Greene County. Mr. and Mrs. Berry have two sons -- William Guy, born May 1, 1876, and Thomas G., born June 20, 1881. Politically Mr. Berry is a Republican. He takes an active interest in educational matters, and in the improvement of Greene County.
