    "Loring (Doolittle) b. Aug. 3, 1784. When on his way to the West in pioneer days his party were crossing Lake Erie by boat from Buffalo. He was a good swimmer, and when his hat fell overboard he jumped over after it, but was drowned. He was buried in Erie St. Cemetery, Cleveland; was unm."
