When Lois was born, the family lived on Arthur Street, in an area of Minneapolis called Prospect Park. Because of all the coal smoke from various souces, they decided it wasn't a healthy place for a child, so in 1919, they moved into the home in Morningside, 4006 West 44th St. Lois lived there until keeping the home was just too difficult in 1997. As she grew up she learned from her father, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, all in that home. Father was a doctor. He was one of the State Epidemiologists, and worked with the native American tribe at White Earth, especially in caring for and diagnosing infectious diseases of the era. Lois delighted in nature, birds, plants, history. She began school a year ahead of other children, and there learned so quickly that she was able to move from 1st to 3rd grade, skipping 2nd, and graduated from West High School in Minneapolis at age 16, then off to the University of Minnesota and a major in foreign languages and a minor in music. She was one of those natural singers. She also learned from her mother Harriet, who was somewhat of a "modern woman." Harriet was an excellent cook, having learned that from both her mother and grandmother. So that is where she became such an excellent cook. And after marrying Dennis Lane, she taught me, and my siblings those long learned skills. Great-Grandmother Ann Williams, came from Yorkshire England, so her meal preparations were from that heritage. When children joined Lois and Dennis, Harriet was the only parent of Lois's left. She lived with them until her death in 1954. As the children grew, Lois continued to do the things she had been taught and passed them on to her children. So with all the memories over the years, Lois was all these things to me, but most of all she was Mom.
