The Jews in Germany were emancipated around 1820, got out of the ghettos and were permitted to settle in many places provided they learned a trade. Loeb Nussbaum became a shoemaker, which was only a facade to satisfy the authorities. He sold fabrics and household items to the farmers in the villages surrounding the village of Aschenhausen, where he lived. - Louis Nussbaum, in a letter to Daniel J. Stern, dated October 5, 1994
