Shirley Marie Umphfleet, 73, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, July 26, 2013.

Shirley was born August 5, 1939 in Stuart, Iowa to Chester and Violet Coleman. She was a secretary for Powell CDC at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Shirley served on the patient advocate council at Genesis Senior Living Center for many years. Her greatest passion and joy in life was her family. Shirley also enjoyed spending time with her friends, activities at the Southside Senior Citizens Center and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved to travel, shop, ceramics and was an avid movie buff.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Dick Umphfleet; sons, Craig (Jenny) Umphfleet and Mike (Susie) Umphfleet; grandchildren, Mitch, Alli, Sara and Matt; brother, Richard Coleman; brother-in-law, Jim (Diana) Umphfleet; special cousin, Judy (Tom) Stephens; her lifelong best friend & “sister”, Nancy (Doug) Phillips, close friends, Joanne Walker and Chris Davis; and many extended family members and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A private family burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
