Lillie stayed home and took care of her parents and her mother expected her to not marry. However, she met Albert Clevenger at church and started "sneaking" out after church to see him. They hid notes to each other in an old tree. After deciding to get married, Lillie started hiding clothes, a few at a time, at her sister Addie's house. One day after church, Albert picked her up in a buggy, they drove to Addie's house and recovered the things she had left there and were married at the home of Rev. Oscar Clevenger, Albert's brother. The wedding was performed by Rev. Clevenger. When Lillie's mother, Sarah, found out she was so angry she refused to let Lillie have the rest of her belongings. So Lillie never recovered the many quilts and other things she had made for her "hope chest", including her treadle sewing machine she had earned the money for herself. Sarah had red hair and a temper to match according to my mother!
