[edit] NotesLewis chosen in 1787 to serve on Grand Jury. Bought and sold several properties in Orange, Chatham, Guilford, and Randolph counties, NC 1789 through February, 1837. 1807 bought Nathan Hornaday's farm on Fayette Road. May have held as many as 1480 acres in Orange County. Owned as many as fifteen slaves. By 1818 decided to become a Quaker. Sold his slaves to the Society of Friends for "love and affection" so that the Society might set them free. Lewis was then received into the Cane Creek Quaker Meeting on 6 February 1819. He remained a faithful member until he died. Lewis and family are in Quaker records: Spring Monthly Meeting, Orange County, NC and Cane Creek Monthly Meeting. Foreclosed on his father-in-law's property when his father-in-law did not pay him a mortgage loan. |
