[from "A Pioneer History of Wirt County" by Tommie Sewell, in the Wirt County Journel, Vol 79 No 6?, c 1979] On October 18, 1861, at Spenser, then Virginia, Lewis Full joined the Confederate Army under the command of Captain James A. Crawford of Company F., 17th Virginia Cavalry, known as the "Night Hawk Rangers." His company was a unit of the Fourth Brigade, fifth division, army of northern Virginia and his regiment was commanded by General A. C. Jenkins until that officer was killed at the battle of Clyde Mountain and later under the command of General John A. McCausland. Captain Crawford's company was made up entirely of men from Jackson and Wirt counties. Among his company's conrades were Frank Thorn, Alfred Somerville, Frank Goff, Baxter Howard, Hyatt Sheppard, Henry Sheppard, Frank Pomeroy, Jesse Roach, Jacob Goff, Jake Bumgarner, George Saunders, Joesph and John Bumgarner, William Saunders, Bryant Utter, Wash Saunders, Al Riddle, Henry Steven, and Jefferson Ayers. Lewis Full served continuously till the close of the war when the company was disbanded in Lynchburg, Virginia. He served six years as amember of the Wirt County Court.
