Facts and Events
The Doty-Doten Family in America says: The writer had the pleasure of meeting Lewis Doty at his residencein New York City, in 1871, he being at that time eighty years old, and avery active man for his years, enjoying good health and with all hisfaculties unimpaired. He said that by the efforts of his mother, whosememory he held in great respect, he received a common country schooleducation and came to New York City, 1805, where he engaged as clerk inthe grocery store of Jonah Tilley, then at Crane Wharf, where now theFulton market stands. He returned to Westchester after awhile and cameagain to New York in 1812, but as the war prostrated all business, heagain returned to Westchester. He left there finally in 1816, and in NewYork went into the grocery business with mr. Hunt, and in 1817, marriedhis employer's daughter. He carried on the business at No. 32 Bowery, which was then in the very outskirts of the city, there being scarcelyany houses about Broome street. He was successful, and in 1829 boughtthe corner of Bowery and Third street, where he subsequently lived. Atthis time it was considered quite out of town, and he could easily seefrom his doorsteps the vessels in the East River. He retired frombusiness about 1851, spending his leisure time in fishing and otherout-of-door recreations, finding that to agree with his health andcomfort. He had an excellent memory and it was delightful to sit andtalk with him and hear his recollections of old scenes. References
