Lewis homesteaded 160 acres southwest of Morrill where he lived in a dugout with a sod roof and also in other sod houses. Edna was born in a sod house. He helped haul material to build the bridge west of Fort Laramie Wyo. where the North Platte River crosses on the way to the old Fort. His wife dies when Elva was a baby and he soon married Mrs. Powell who was Kate, Evan, and Anna's mother. They then moved up in the Kincade country about 5 miles northeast of the Couth homestead. Carroll would visit his Grandpa Casteel with his parents where he lived (was batchin') near Lyman - Caldwell. He was an extremely gentle man, hard working, and never asked anything of anyone. He was quite bald with a fringe of white hair around his head and a white bushy mustache. He died of heart failure at his home. His first wife died in 1907 - he remarried Ettie Powell in 1908 and separated 10 years later. He lived the rest of his life as a single person in a small home 1 mile east of Lyman.
