Les left school in 1945 at the age of 14, and worked in two timber mills in Avoca for several years. At some stage, he went to work in the coal mine his father started, Stanhope. He worked there as a blaster for 15-20 years.

On 18 March 1967 he married Patricia Elsie May Madden, and a few months later, he began work as the Postmaster at Avoca.

In early 1973 the family moved to Fingal, where Les remained as Postmaster until his retirement in 1996. He and Pat then moved to live in Hobart.
