Lemuel D. Sheppard appears on the roster of Company B, Jeff Davis Legion, Mississippi Cavalry. This record indicates that he held the rank of 1st sergeant. The National Parks Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database, confirms his unit and rank. The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Database indicates that this unit was was organized in January, 1862, "using the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus" and "participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, then was active north and south of the James River." 'It lost 4 wounded at Brandy Station, and had 4 killed and 10 wounded of the 246 at Gettysburg. En route from Pennsylvania, it had 2 killed and 12 wounded, and 3 were wounded during the Bristoe Campaign. In 1865 the unit was assigned to General Logan's Brigade and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee."

L. D. Sheppard appears on a muster roll as First Sergeant of Capt James Gordon's Company (Chickasaw Rangers), Mississippi Volunteers, which subsequently became Company B, Jeff Davis Legion. He enlisted on March 16, 1861 at Okolona at the age of 18. Records include a requisition signed by him as Second Sergeant for military buttons for the Chickasaw Rangers, dated May 1, 1861.
